Review Sheet for Tuesday's Quiz

Good Sunday morning, Pre-Calculus classes!  The answer key to the Review Sheet has been uploaded to the Walton pre-calc blog at http://waltonhigh.typepad.com/precalc/.  Be sure to check your answers and if you have questions, post them HERE!!!  Tuesday's quiz will be 50% binomial expansion (make sure you review your homework!) and 50% combinations/permutations...have a great weekend!

  1. Hi! I was wondering how to do problem #12 using a calculator, every time I use mine the calculator says ERROR: OVERFLOW.

    1. Hi Gabrielle! Remember we had one like this from the last homework. In class I said if it is too big a number, your calculator won't calculate it (too many digits). So, you'll have to use your nCr combination feature to solve this one in the calculator.

  2. If we have a problem that says error overflow how should we write our answers??

    1. Courtnie, did you read the post above this one? Same question, and I already posted an answer.

  3. Hey Courtnie. I guess you could put down whatever you had before you put it into the calculator. Like putting down 10^100 instead of whatever it equals because it would be an overflow. Also I had 2 questions about the review sheet.
    1. For the word problems how can I tell which one requires nCr or nPr? I know that in Permutation order matters but for Combination it doesn't.
    2. I don't understand how to do distinguishable permutations for groups of letters.

    1. Greg, you answered your own question there in #1. If the order matters, use nPr...if not, use nCr.

Distinguishable permutations for groups of letters should look like this:
(total letters)!/divided by [(repeat #1)! (repeat #2)!, etc]...so if I were going to do my first name, for instance (J-E-N-N-I-F-E-R), I would do 8!/(2!2!). I included one 2! for the two N's, and one 2! for the two E's
